WHAT WE DO WITH OUR DOGS
Here at Vom Haus Dettmer, much
love and care goes into raising
our Long Coat German Shepherds.
We are a small
HOBBY BREEDER
and very proud of it!
For those of you that might be
ignorant or misled to know what
a "hobby breeder" is, according
to most definitions or even the
AKC terms this is how most
'informed' would describe a
hobby breeder...
A breed fancier that usually
only has one breed, maybe two;
has a breeding plan they follow
in effort to preserve and
protect the breed;
produces none to a couple
litters a year;
dogs live in humane and sanitary
conditions;
breed to enhance the breed and
not solely for monetary reasons
as they normally have other jobs
or income;
raises puppies with
environmental and human
interaction;
screen breeding stock to
eliminate or reduce hereditary
defects by proper testing;
ACTIVELY works with a club or
training facility to promote
awareness of the breed;
screens each potential buyer to
ensure the puppy is placed in
the best home possible.
We don't own so many dogs that
we can't give each and every one
of them the training, attention
and the love they so desire!
Yes, we wish we had more time in
the day for all our dogs, but
isn't that true for most things
- even family, friends, travel,
sleep!?!
We take our Long Haired German
Shepherds to training, they get
TONS of daily interaction, they
spend time inside our homes,
outdoors in yards/kennels,
running in our pasture, hiking
in our grove of Oak trees and
riding in our cars! They
even ride on our tractor!
Our dogs play ball, hunt birds,
chase deer and yes, even attempt
to 'threaten' the neighbors
taking a quiet, evening walk now
and then! But, no harm is
meant in seeing "who's coming
down OUR ROAD"!! Sorry,
Matt!! :)
We give our Long Coat German
Shepherds much mind-stimuli!
We mow with them and even shoot
the gun around them. Some
of our dogs enjoy it. Some
don't. It tells us what
dogs are very 'sound', what dogs
are a bit more 'stressed' under
pressure.
After time, some dogs even begin
to enjoy 'hunting' even when
they once didn't like it so
much!
All our Long Coats LOVE water!
Unfortunately, they swim more
than we do!
If around town, you will catch
us walking our German Shepherds.
Sometimes picking up ice cream
at the local town dairy shop
with 6 dogs in the truck.
Sometimes, going to the swimming
pool to see the swimmers!
Sorry, No Dogs Allowed!
Sometimes, walking the school
track, watching the train roar
by. Either way, it's just
a nice time and a great
experience. Stop by, say
hi! Come take a walk!
We LOVE the German Shepherd
breed - Long Coat German
Shepherds, Standard Coat German
Shepherds and all Coat German
Shepherds! I've owned
many! We breed ONLY
because we have what WE think
are fabulous dogs and simply to
share them with 'responsible'
people wanting to own them too.
Yes, they are Long Coat German
Shepherds, and some folks say
they don't 'matter', as the hair
don't 'fit' the standard.
Ahhh, but they are so very
beautiful, are they not?!?!
In betterment and longevity of
this fabulous breed!
HOW WE BREED OUR DOGS
At Vom Haus Dettmer, we
selectively
decide with predetermined goals
to produce two and no more than
three long coated German
shepherd litters each year.
We hope to breed dogs of sound
mind, healthy bodies, willing,
easy-going temperaments and
sturdy, large-boned structures.
We don't simply breed for HUGE
dogs, but dogs that are not
'frail' in bone or with thin
headsets.
We breed for dogs with a natural
desire and instinct to work and
herd. We don't breed for
overly 'goey' dogs, or 'hyper'
dogs, but dogs of an older day
that had a natural desire to
protect or work all day and then
come home and go to sleep!
We have Long Coated German
Shepherds that are happy
trotting by your side, doing
chores, moving from room to room
as you work, or laying watching
over you as you do your
business, but with a watchful,
curious eye.
We breed Long Haired German
Shepherds that live in homes
with children they adore.
Look at the many pages of kids
who are loving on their dogs!
We breed for dogs with a natural
desire and a hereditary gene of
'versatility'. German
Shepherds were meant to be agile
and versatile and mobile.
Able to leap, jump and run fast,
ever always graceful.
If you need a very quiet
lifestyle please seek a more
laid-back breed! This is
NOT the breed for you!
Find a LAP dog! Long Coat
German Shepherds NEED exercise!
This is NOT a dog
that should be sleeping on the
couch 24 x 7, or running circles
locked in a kennel!
We do NOT breed for aggression
or fearful/shy dogs.
German Shepherds should be
aloof, yet fearless, able and
willing to accept the job at
hand. Always
on the alert, with a natural
ability to 'judge' as if
thinking before 'reacting'.
That is why you see so many
German Shepherds in the jobs
with Police Enforcement
Agencies, Search and Rescue and
things of that nature.
They are willing and able!
We don't breed generation after
generation of any single
temperament. For
example... large, lazy
tempered Long Coated German
Shepherds. If you breed
lazy to lazy, after three
generations you have pure
laziness. Then, you have changed
the 'breed', so to speak.
Why would you want to take a
breed of German Shepherds, with
a standard of herding, working,
versatility, etc, and create
something so different than that
of what someone had worked so
hard to create - and call it
such?
We breed for Total Dog! We
have the best German Shepherds
in our Haus, we feel. If
we didn't sell one, we would not
care! They are athletes,
companions, protectors, Canine
Good Citizens AND simply stunning to the eye!
Lastly, our Long Coated German
Shepherds are our family members
first and foremost. They
are our companions, not just
'puppy-generators'! We
know not all dogs should be
breeders, and sometimes after
offsping is produced, we might
not repeat that breeding.
These dogs make excellent pets
for either us, or others.
Three beautiful family members
right here, all girls of the
same 'family'. Momma
and girls!
COATS
We breed long haired German
Shepherds, also known as long
coat german shepherds, coated
german shepherds and plush coat
german shepherds.
Normally, the long stock german
shepherds have much longer hair
and the plush coated german
shepherds are a bit less in the
coat length. We also have
standard coat german shepherds,
on occasion.
Our Long Coat German Shepherds come in various colors
from black and tan, black and
silver, bi-color, red and black,
mahogany sable, silver sable,
and whites.
Our long haired German shepherds
are VERY deep
in pigmentation and color, as
you can see in the picture
above. Our pictures are
not "enhanced" like some to make
their colors look more vibrant.
They ARE vibrant colors of black
and red and you can ask anyone
who has seen them or owns one!
Their red and black is VERY
rich.
They
are not washed out or faded.
WE RAISE OUR OWN GERMAN
SHEPHERDS
At Vom Haus Dettmer we love,
care and provide for the sole
financial responsibly of raising
our Long Coated German Shepherds
and Long Haired German Shepherd
puppies.
Our Long Coat German puppies for
sale are raised in our Haus.
We don't pay anyone to raise our
Long Hair German Shepherd litters.
WHERE OUR PUPPIES LIVE
Our Long Coat German Shepherd
Puppies for sale are whelped
inside my home.
I am with my females from the
time they begin to whelp, until
they finish whelping, for each
and every puppy born.
Every puppy is cleaned off,
weighed and sometimes
'delivered' until 'life' is
achieved!
I sleep in a bed close to the
whelping room for the first week
after the puppies have arrived
to ensure all pups make it
through the initial, most critical
week.
I weigh the pups each day, clean
out and sanitize their whelping
room and ensure the female gets
sufficient potty breaks.
I handle every puppy daily!!
They are not born in
make-shift closets, wire cages, outdoor kennels, or
wooden boxes.
After
birth, our Long Coat German
Shepherd puppies live
in the whelping room, yet
are handled daily and move about as
they grow.
Music, television, and humans
surround them constantly.
It's
not uncommon to find a 'human'
sleeping with them at any given
time - in their sleeping
quarters! It's so hard to
resist!
Although, puppies must
have lots of rest and private
time, our puppies spend so much
time out in OUR environment,
normally, after they pass one
week of age and are healthy and
strong!
Our Long Coat German Shepherd
puppies sleep on actual
'blankets', not newspaper or
shavings.
Although, I do begin preparing
them for housebreaking after
approx. 4 weeks of age with a
makeshift potty area.
Many of my clients say that
housebreaking was a 'breeze', on
comparison to some dogs owned!
Of course, we all know
housebreaking is not the most
fun job and it DOES take time,
compassion, consistency and
effort!!
After approx 3 weeks of age, our
long coat german shepherd puppies begin to visit the great
outdoors.
Weather permitting,
they spend several visits
outside throughout the day.
However, they still sleep
indoors.
By six weeks of age, our long
hair german shepherd puppies are
sleeping outdoors, as they are
in most breeder homes.
It's a necessity, both for
cleanliness and the brain
development of the pups!
They need outdoor stimulation so
that they are not afraid of the
sights and sounds outdoors, as
well.
Starting at three weeks, we
take the Long Coated puppies
outside, STAYING WITH THEM and then
bring them back indoors, weather
permitting! They
are ALWAYS supervised at this
age while outdoors. They are
NOT PLACED IN KENNELS! They are
placed on blankets (at a young
age, until they venture about) to spend time
taking in the sunshine/shade and
to take in the sights and
sounds.
And, yes, for picture taking of
course!
Puppies are given round-the-clock
care and attention until they
leave to their new home. I
am a stay-at-home breeder during
puppy whelping and until
placement. Breeding is NOT
a part-time job for me!
At 4 weeks of age, we begin
feeding them 'real' food!
Every week, we take pictures and
post them to the world to see!
From 4 weeks on, the pups are
exposed to brushing, hair dryers
and even the shop vac.
Many of our pups at 8 weeks of
age will sit for the suction of
the shop vac without being held!
Each pup is
socialized to many surroundings
prior to leaving to their
life-time homes at 8 weeks of
age.
We do not ship or allow
for pick-up of puppies PRIOR TO
8 WEEKS. NO EXCEPTIONS!
We do not allow visits to our
facilities, for any reason,
until pups are over 7 weeks of
age! We are EXTREMELY
concerned for the health and
well-being of our pups and
visitors can stress puppies AND
pass communicable diseases.
Sorry, our pups are THAT
important. And, we don't
want to ship a sold puppy to
anyone and have it come down ill
from something a visitor might
spread right before leaving.
We're sorry,
but for the health and
well-being of our young puppies,
we do not allow 'outside' dogs
to visit our home while pups are
on the ground, especially, those
who we are not familiar with -
NO exceptions! We also
don't allow children to play
unsupervised with the dogs,
while parents visit the kennels.
Children can get 'lost' very
quickly!
Our
facility is closed on Sundays
for family time, chores, church
and rest! Thank you for your
understanding!
SPAY/NEUTER
At VHD we REALLY DO believe that
an 'altered' or 'fixed' dog
makes the best pet, or Ultimate
Canine Companion. Therefore, we
do suggest to each and every
client that buys a dog to have
it spayed or neutered.
Because we feel very strongly
about this issue, VHD will pay
for a portion of the spay/neuter
of your puppy up to and not
exceeding $50 at one year
of age, and up to 15 months.
We suggest that you wait as long
as you can in getting your pup
altered, as close to two years,
if possible. It's best for
their health to keep them intact
for the first two years of
growth and hormones!
Proper documentation is required
to obtain your
cash back.
After one thru two years from the date of
sale, VHD reserves the right to
deny any cash back or
registration if you do not
spay/neuter your dog, as your
contract requires!
VHD reserves
the right to deny any cash back,
at any time, for any reason.
REGISTRATION
All our Long Coat German
Shepherd parents are carefully
registered at the club of our
choice, depending upon their
heritage, our training/show
needs and our 'preference'.
Most all our Long Hair German
Shepherd puppies are sold as
Ultimate Companions, meaning, to
'pet' homes, therefore, we
require a spay/neuter contract.
Any registration is at
the discretion of Vom Haus
Dettmer.
We do support a
spay/neuter program and believe
doing so makes a better 'family
pet'.
We do love to see our pups
achieve titles in competitive
sports with their human
companions at the end of the
leash!
Our dogs are not sold STRICTLY
for breeding purposes just for
the average person to go through
the experience of having a
litter. Although, we may sell
pups to ethical, humane breeders
at our discretion.
Normally, those to whom we have
established relationships with
only!
We value the
hard work, time and significant
expense that good breeders put
into creating quality dogs. The
average person, not having had
puppies before, is not always
equipped with the time, space,
significant expense and effort
it takes in determining if, when
and how a dog should be bred.
We don't support
those who wish to breed just
because they want a litter for
their kids to experience 'birth'
or to fulfill a companion dog's
need to 'breed'. I don't
believe that the average person
would choose to lose sleep in
excess of 24 hour periods, help recessitate pups who might have
been in the birth canal too
long, take rectal temperatures,
clean up afterbirth and/or
dispose of newborns who just
didn't have a 'chance'.
FOSTER CARE
At Vom Haus Dettmer, we are huge
participants in activities
involving our local animal
shelters. We rescue, foster,
train, participate in fund
raising and support our state,
and nearby state animal-saving
laws and work.
NUTRITION
We feed our dogs a quality,
meat-based dog food.
We feed
SOLID GOLD dog food, which is
also one of THE BEST dog foods
in the world!
We also provide meat, veggies,
pro-biotics, supplements (Nuvet,
along with other things such as
Solid Gold Sea Meal, Vitamin C,
Flax Oil, etc).
We require all new puppy owners
to put their pups on NUVET until
they reach two years of age, and
hopefully, thereafter!
The AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB
recommends and sells Solid Gold dog
food as one of THE BEST!
We suggest our clients provide
this type of feeding, as well.
However, we don't dictate your
feeding table! Each dog is
different, as is his health and
nutrition. Whatever you
choose to feed, we will require that
you feed a good, meat-based
PREMIUM food with supplements
and occasional meat and veggies!
NO GROCERY STORE BRANDS!
If you need assistance, please
feel free to contact us.
We have done extensive research
on RAW diets and nutritional
needs. If you feed a
completely raw diet, please
ensure all the essential
nutrients and vitamins are also
provided. This is crucial for
this large-breed dog.
At our home, our dogs are fed
individually. Each dog receives
his daily table in accordance
and measured to his/her
nutritional needs.
We don't
'free-feed' on a regular basis.
Although, all our dogs can and
do eat together from one trough
on a select day per week.
It's a free-for-all feeding, RAW
diet that also allows for them
to develop 'nice' table manners.
ALL our dogs to this day can eat
together nicely! They just
don't all fit too well around
the table at once!
Some of our dogs
would do well with free feeding,
while others would not!
Our
dogs eat from individual
stainless steel feeders that are
washed and sanitized after each
and every feeding.
The picture above shows you that
our dogs are all raised to
accept my rules of pack
leadership and with sound
temperaments, they CAN eat
together, if requested.
We maintain proper weight,
ensure optimal nutrients and
ensure that we monitor the intake of each and
every dog at our home.
Any change
in normal daily intake can be a
first sign in your dog not
feeling well.
Keep in mind, many German Shepherds
are prone to food allergies.
Corn, soy, wheat, beef, yeast
and other various products could
pose potential problems for any pooch!
Not all dogs can tolerate some
types of foods, just like many
people have different food
tolerances, likes and dislikes.
Too high carb levels can also resemble
'allergies'. That is
another reason we don't free
feed! I have dogs who
don't like Lamb, others don't
tolerate Beef well.
Soybean is a well-known
allergen! We don't feed
soy!
We suggest
speaking with your vet if you
incur problems with weight gain,
allergies, and/or nutritional
problems.
VHD will
assist with food recommendations
at any time throughout your dogs
life.
All VHD dogs are on NuVet
Supplements! And, all our
puppy owners are required to
keep their new puppies healthy
too, by providing these yummy
HUMAN GRADE vitamins to their
dogs. Made from all
natural ingredients and chicken
livers! If you get a pup
from us, you will be expected to
purchase the NuVet product for a
min. of two years. Your
health guarantee will depend
upon it! Order your

'natures' way, or help relieve
allergies! See the list of
the benefits by the ingredients

VACCINATIONS
Veterinary care for your pup/dog
is a must! Your pup will
receive vaccinations required for the
first 8 weeks of their life. Wormings, at 2, 4, 6 and 8
weeks, as well.
However, it will be the
responsibility of the new family
members to establish a good
rapport with a local
veterinarian for proper
life-long care. Be
prepared to provide VHD with
your veterinarian's name!
We require you determine a vet
prior to our pups moving to your
home!
Be advised to discuss with your
vet the new protocol for
vaccinations for dogs!
There is much indication
/discussion that there is no
longer a need for annual
vaccinations and that doing so
could be harming your dog!
PLEASE discuss this with your
vet! After your first
annual set of shots, they are
recommending every three years,
to every seven years for some
shots and also some to be
eliminated. PLEASE DO
DISCUSS THIS WITH ME OR YOUR
VET!!! DO NOT OVER
VACCINATE YOUR DOG!!
IT IS REPORTED THAT ANNUAL SHOTS ARE NOW
NOT GOOD FOR YOUR DOG!!
I am not qualified to say here
what is right or wrong, but that
you SHOULD discuss this with
your vet or read the latest
research information
as well as contacting your
breeder/vet
before your make a decision in
the best interest of your pet!
GROOMING
At VHD we groom our dogs daily.
They do shed! Standard
German Shepherds shed
differently than Long Coat
German Shepherds, but ALL do
shed! There are different
types of coats in German
Shepherds. Standard,
Plush, Long and even a couple
different types of Long Coat
undercoats! Each shed!
And, individual dogs will shed
differently than each other of
the same coat type!! Diet,
grooming, health, etc. plays a
LARGE role in dog shedding as
well!
A quick and thorough brushing
each day will keep your dog
looking and feeling good.
Grooming
helps stay abreast of any
skin problems that might occur,
especially after a long walk,
looking for 'burrs', bites and/or
things like ticks. These
things are best
treated if found immediately.
We give our Long Coat German
Shepherds baths, as
necessary, but at least once per
month. It helps to 'blow out'
the dead hair and keeps down the
dander and dust buildup. It
also keeps the dog feeling happy
and looking good!
We have
commercial grooming equipment
and each puppy will experience a
'professional' grooming
experience before they move into
their new homes - with washers
and blowers!
Vom Haus Dettmer requires each
new client to attend a min. of
one training class with their
new puppy, and they provide a
cash back rebate for doing so,
based on your contract.
We hope you find training fun
and beneficial and attend
multiple classes!
We love to see pictures of you
and your puppy in class.
If you send them, we will post
them! Pictures ARE
required for training rebates!
Please note, there are MANY
different training methods
available, and most dictated by
the preference of the person
training. We don't recommend
any one type. Each dog is
different, as is their ability
to 'grasp' training concepts.
The Long Coat German Shepherd is
very intelligence,
but also unique in its learning
abilities. Training should be
based on the temperament and
emotional abilities that your
dog displays. A very shy and
submissive dog might not do well
in an aggressive/correction-type
training class.
Please use your
dog's temperament to his own
advantage in choosing the
training method that you use.
Each dog will EXCEL in his
learning ability if the methods
delivered are conducive to
his/her temperament.
Treats are
good for puppies starting out
for attention purposes, but
should be lessened or eliminated
as the dog matures in learning.
The Long Haired German Shepherd
has a natural desire to learn
and please. This 'natural
ability' is significant and they
should not need 'cookies' to
please their owners!
Although, all dogs enjoy
'rewards' beit, toys, treats or
blankets after a good training
session!
SHIPPING
Shipping is available throughout
the United States.
The
size of pup and
crate weight will dictate this
expense at the date of
shipping. This is 'pre-paid' to
VHD prior to the puppy shipping
- by 6 weeks of age.
You will also
be responsible for a crate and
vet health certificate to fly
the puppy. This is above the
price of the puppy and included
in shipping costs dictated by Vom
Haus Dettmer, at the time of
sale. All deposits,
puppy costs and shipping must be
paid in full by the time the pup
is 6 weeks of age. No
exceptions.
MY COMMITMENT!
I work very hard to develop
loyal, loving, intelligent
family companions.
This website
is intended to provide you the
'basic' information about our
dogs and our home.
My first
priority is with my dogs, the
website is second to all other.
I try not consume
significant amounts of time
going on and on about every
topic under the sun, but
hopefully, give you 'lots' of
input on how we run our Long
Coat German Shepherd kennel.
Much of
this is basic, however, items of
greater importance, like placing
a puppy or raising and training
is necessary to discuss in
person/phone. I won't sell
a puppy without a phone call!
At Vom Haus Dettmer, great
importance is placed on our
commitment to quality and
customer service.
We STRIVE to
SHOW you how we raise our dogs.
I train and handle each and
every one of my dogs. I don't
ship them out for others to
handle. This keeps me in touch
with each of my dog's needs and
temperaments. I've been
training dogs for years and
there is not a day that goes by
that I don't learn something new
for myself, one-on-one with my
dogs by my side.
I promote my dogs and post what
I 'do' with pictures of our
dogs. We promote family, friends, strangers,
and other dog-lovers, going places,
hiking, swimming, training and
socialization. I helps
promote responsible pet
ownership!
We want people
to see that our dogs are not
just 'tethered' to leashes
posing for pictures, especially,
for
those who can't come to visit in
person!
We REALLY
DO have Long Coated German
Shepherds in all our daily
activities.
We stand behind our
commitment to raising Ultimate
Family Companions and our desire
is to show you just that!
Lastly, please do your research
before buying any dog! These
are creatures of God and deserve
your commitment and respect.
Dogs are for life, not just a
'novelty' or 'fad'. If at
anytime you can't keep your
beloved dog, we will take it
back!
Make sure
your entire family agrees on the
commitment necessary to share
your life with a Vom Haus
Dettmer, Long Coated German
Shepherd!
All VHD dogs are
returnable for the LIFE OF THE
DOG, regardless of the reason.
However, shipping and return are
the responsibility of the
owner. No monies are ever
refunded, for any reason, due to
your inability to keep your dog
or provide it the home it
deserves.
Thanks for your visit!
I hope you find something of
value and enjoy the pictures.
If I
don't have what you need, I'd be
more than happy to recommend
another breeder.
Regardless of
where your puppy search takes
you, I thank you for looking
here and I wish you and your new
puppy a future of wonderful
memories and happiness.
Thank you to all my past puppy
owners. I'm grateful to
you for opening your hearts and
homes to one of my Long Coated
German Shepherd babies!
God Bless.
