Welcome to Vom Haus Dettmer, Long coat German Shepherds!

Welcome to Vom Haus Dettmer!

We love our dogs and hope that you will too, after your visit!

Vom Haus Dettmer's home is on a beautiful ranch in Missouri Valley, IA., where we share our home with a few superior, devoted and extremely loyal Long Haired or Long Coated German Shepherd companions.  Some people call them long coated, some call them long haired.  Whatever you call them, they are simply German Shepherds with long hair!

If you've never owned a Long Hair German Shepherd, please do your research on this breed before considering one.  They need socialization, training and human contact.  A family that will love them unconditionally is a must!

We don't sell 'our' dogs to be tethered to a chain in the backyard or put on a 'shock' collar just to patrol the premises.  Although, there are dogs that serve a 'protection' purpose, they are properly trained and cared for by professionals for this position.   In the wrong hands these dogs can be very dangerous, as with any breed unsupervised or not given the proper care.  Long Coat German Shepherds desire and DESERVE a 'family' environment.   Their ability to give and please is unsurpassed.

You will see ME as their handler, with them, around people, at outings, in TRAINING, being socialized, swimming, eating and just being loved on.  These are the SAME DOGS you will see as the parents to potential puppies that YOU might own.  Not 'just' pictures of various dogs I have bred or placed.  But, these too!

With permission and much PRIDE, I will display to the world pictures of my Happy Families to whom we do sell our puppies who model our same practices, to whom we teach and sometimes preach!  In a nice way, of course!

You will also see the admiration and joy we display to our very young folks who take so much interest, pride and responsibility in raising their young puppies.  To them, our hearts go out and we are forever grateful!  We appreciate the parents for being such wonderful role models since our children will, someday, be the next generation of responsible canine owners!

Our Long Coated German Shepherds are bred to be intelligent, loving and loyal to their humans.

You won't hear a lot of 'lip service' about what our dogs can do, you will SEE IT!!  OUR Long Haired German shepherds will be pictured in action, not just standing out at the end of a leash posing for the camera.    Our dogs don't stand in kennels.  They get TONS of daily exercise, and are multi-dog friendly!

The Long Coat German Shepherd has the ability to excel in any 'sport', and is second to none.  Whether it be searching, hiking, swimming, obedience, digging, therapy, fishing, standing guard at the gate, sleeping OR just playing catch in the backyard, these dogs will perform to their utmost best!

A group shot!

At Vom Haus Dettmer, we spend hours with our German Shepherd dogs developing their minds and hearts so that we can produce the Ultimate Family Companions in their progeny.  You will see our love and commitment for the betterment of the Long Coat German Shepherd breed, in strong minds, bodies and temperament.

Our love is deep, and our commitment in breeding sound dogs is important.  These dogs are first and foremost members of our family.  It is after that, we choose to share our lines with others!

WE own ALL OUR breeding dogs.  We NEVER give away a dog and retain breeding rights and make money off the sale of the puppies that the new owner breeds, without having to care for the dog.   When we sell a puppy or dog, it is YOURS to keep!

Our HAUS is a small home and hobby breeding.   We normally offer two litters of pups for sale each year.

If we keep a puppy for breeding that we later decide to sell, you may see an older dog on our site for sale.

If you don't provide activities for your German Shepherd, be assured, they will make their own 'fun' - like digging up your flower garden!  TRAINING is a MUST, and very possible with this breed!  You get out of it what you put into it!  Training builds greater relationships, develops lines of 'communication' and makes all companions a better member of 'society'.  What more could you ask for??

Snow is the only way to go!

The one, most important trait you will get with a Long haired German shepherd is unconditional love.

Please be forewarned...you will have a friend for life!

One that will 'trail' your footsteps, into unknown territories, with the utmost respect, for the remainder of your time together.  You are not an 'owner' of this breed, they are your loyal companion.  Their dedication to your 'relationship' is unconditional and lifelong.

If you are not in the 'market' for a dog at this time, please email me for future litter information.

See our INFORMATION page for greater details on our program.

Most all of the information that is on this site is written by me.  I try to use very few links, as I'm not concerned about 'ranking' my site, rather sharing 'MY' input or views on how Long Coat German Shepherds of MY Haus are raised.  Often times, a site becomes crowded and confusing by so many links, in an effort to achieve 'rankings'.  Many times, you're not sure if the person even shares the same 'views' or opinions as the links they are presenting!   You can usually tell when the verbiage they present conflicts with the link info they are posting - if the link still works!

We really DO appreciate you stopping by!

THE VOM HAUS DETTMER MISSION FOR BREEDING LONG COAT GERMAN SHEPHERDS IS TO...

PRODUCE HEALTHY, INTELLIGENT LONG HAIRED GERMAN SHEPHERDS THROUGH ON-GOING EDUCATION, CONSTANT ASSESSMENT OF BREEDING GOALS, COMPASSION AND ETHICS.  OUR DOGS ARE SOLD ONLY TO RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS,  WHO IN-TURN, PROVIDE LEADERSHIP, TRAINING AND LIFE-LONG
CARE FOR OUR OFFSPRING.

Origin:

One of the most versatile and talented breeds in the world today, the German Shepherd Dog has been valued in police work, search and rescue, herding and avalanche rescue, as superior family companions and so much more.  In the 1890s, Captain Max von Stephanitz,  German cavalry officer, envisioned a superb and versatile herding dog and began a breeding program made up of the best German farm dogs available.   He succeeded beyond all expectations.  The GSD first came to North America in the early 1900's and got a huge boost in popularity here after WWI when Rin Tin Tin's movie exploits captured the attention of the public.

The GSD is stable, sensible, intelligent, quick to learn, loyal and protective of his home and property.    He has exceptional stamina, and was initially bred to trot all day long.  Though relatively calm and quiet indoors, this breed needs lots of outdoor exercise to maintain condition and mind stimulation.

Males ideally range from 75-80 pounds, with height at approx. 25 inches to the shoulder.  These are standard measurements.  Females are somewhat smaller in size and height.

Today, there are a wide range of colors, although the accepted colors are black-and-tan, red-and-black, varying shades of sable or all black.

The long haired shepherd actually were the 'parents' so-to-speak of the short haired.  In 1899 two kinds of shepherds were present.   One, of longer hair.   They were bred to herd sheep.  Later, the German Shepherd SV club was founded and the longer haired dogs were found undesirable on the condition that they lacked the dense undercoat.  Although, many clubs exist today specific to Long Haired German Shepherds, especially in Germany, state clubs such as the American Kennel Club still consider this long haired 'trait' a 'fault' in Conformation.

Vom Haus Dettmer Dogs:

The above information was based on the GSD Standard.  Vom Haus Dettmer raises LONG HAIRED, LONG COAT or PLUSH German Shepherds, so their coats will be longer than the AKC standard and with varying colors.  The size of the VHD dog sometimes exceeds that stated above, although breeding goals are not simply to create huge or massive dogs, but those of good size without hindrance to the true working, herding ability in which these dogs possess.
