I'm Theresa Dettmer,
owner and breeder of Vom Haus Dettmer Long Coat
German Shepherds!
Vom Haus Dettmer is a
reputable breeder located in Missouri Valley, IA.
We have placed many Long Coat German Shepherd
puppies all over the United States. We own
dogs bred of our haus, bought from reputable
breeders within the United States, as well as
several fabulous Long Coat German Shepherds imported
from Germany and other countries.
I have been breeding
German Shepherds since I was in high school, well
over 30 years ago. Twenty years ago, I
purchased my very first Long Haired German Shepherd
and have admired the breed ever since! My
husband and I have taken on this adventure together
and both share in the love of this wonderful breed.
I've since retired from my corporate position over
11 years now, so that I can give FULL attention and
care to my shepherds. This is NOT a
part-time job, it's a life-long commitment!
This page is to show you
a little about
my family, what we
enjoy and how we live with our Long Coated German
Shepherds, sometimes called Long Haired German
Shepherds! We're happy you found us!
Thanks for taking the time to stop and visit!
For those of you who
don't come to visit our pages will even show you
what we look like, since so many people often ask!
We ARE pictured in many of our photos since we are
VERY hands-on with our dogs and VERY proud of what
we do!
Our Long Hair German
shepherds are by our side daily! In our cars
often! On camping trips and vacations!
Out for dinner and walks. Attending training
and social hours! In fact, our dogs don't ever
go outside to 'potty', day or night, wind, rain,
snow or sunshine without one of us accompanying
them!
I find it humorous when
I see pictures on various dog sites that say..."our
dogs are NOT kennel dogs", when infact you see the
dog pictured outdoors sitting next to a chain link
dog enclosure. Some people don't even
bother to open a kennel door to take a picture!
What does that tell you about human interaction!
Yes, we DO have dog
kennels! Yes, we do have dog buildings with
heat and air! Yes, we do have crates!
Yes, we do have acres of land to run, play and
interact! Yes, we do have indoor beds and
dog-approved areas! There is a time and place
for each! We believe dogs need to be
safe and secure, sometimes meaning locked up when we
are not home for long hours. We believe
in crate training for multiple reasons like vet
visits, hotel visits and traveling so dogs are safe
when they are not by my side. And, with
respect to friend's homes when I visit. Not
all people are dog people! I also live in my
home and have guests and family who like private
moments. My dogs are taught to respect that
not ALL areas belong to them! This often
means not running around jumping on the kitchen
counters when I have company for dinner! Does
this mean all my dogs live outdoors in kennels, in
barns, running freely to roam the country roads,
never seeing me but once a week or day??
Absolutely, not! If breeders with
multi-dog homes tell you they don't have kennels or
crates or outdoor enclosures they might just be
dishonest!
Most importantly, our site will show you
where our
long haired German shepherd dogs roam
, how they interact and how they spend their days!
We have also tried to capture some of the outdoor beauty in our
pages. Yes, there is SOME beauty in Missouri
Valley, Iowa! Not just
cows and corn! But yes, lots of cows and corn!
It is our objective to raise German Shepherds as
close to the standard as possible, with one
exception...long hair. Although, the SV in
Germany is now beginning to acknowledge the Long
Coat German Shepherds in the show ring, it's still
considered a fault in the United States, within the
American Kennel Club registry ( AKC ).
At Vom Haus Dettmer, we
strive to breed German Shepherds with super, athletic-working
abilities, while maintaining loyal, family-oriented
temperaments. Although, our Long Coat German
Shepherds live in a 'multi-dog' environment, you
will see throughout our pages that our dogs are NOT just tossed in a kennel to breed
litter after litter! We work
EXCEPTIONALLY hard to provide daily exercise,
training and mind stimulation to our beloved pets,
along with around the clock companionship! We
don't suggest that you house multi-dog environments,
which takes years of experience and TONS of time and
effort. ONE dog is enough to keep you busy if
you're taking the time to exercise, train and
socialize!
We hope as you view our
pages, you will see German Shepherds of Vom Haus
Dettmer playing with children, riding in cars, going
to work, attending training and just being a dog!
We work very hard to build a foundation of German
Shepherds from superior lines, awesome stability and
stamina, generations of good health and longevity,
and old good old shepherd loyalty!
Our dogs are first and
foremost 'pets', above and beyond ever producing a
litter. We have several retired and altered
companions still living at our haus today.
Some, who have never produced a litter!
Unless, we have requests by well-known and respected
friends or family members to own a 'retired' adult,
our German Shepherds live with us for life!
Any decision to place an adult German Shepherd for
sale is NEVER taken lightly!

I'm forever grateful
that my husband has supported my need to 'dump' my
20 + years of Corporate work to fulfill a dream to devote
'full-time' to raising my Ultimate Long
Haired German Shepherd pups!
I am not a large
breeder, but the work is significant!
To share them with you takes a lot of time
perfecting each litter produced.
I was once a Director
managing people at a Fortune 500 Company.
Today, I manage Long Coat German Shepherds!
|
I've been in a dog
breeding home for almost 50 years! I've bred,
raised and shown a number of breeds. Today,
the German Shepherd still remains my very favorite!
No job or interest in
my life has ever been more important to me
than what I do today with my dogs. My
husband is my soul mate. My dogs are my
life, my reason for waking up every day.
When you buy a Long Coated
German Shepherd puppy from Vom Haus Dettmer,
you will be getting a very special puppy. It's
raised in our very own home and with the best care
provided to ensure the proper 'start' that any one
puppy needs prior to sending it on its way into the
great new world.
We do it the best way we
know how, with ongoing education and careful,
well-thought-out breeding goals. We
continually assess our lines and make the necessary
adjustments as we watch our progeny grow. At
Vom Haus Dettmer we
think this is the ONLY way to run a breeding
program or kennel. Regardless, if you are
breeding one dog or 100!
Long Coat German Shepherds
are not for all people, as any one breed is not best
'suited' for any home, person or environment.
German Shepherds are large, desire human interaction and
require space for exercise! This breed
is not a good 'statue' for you to tie in the back
yard! PLEASE do your research about this
active, loyal and intelligent breed BEFORE
committing to buy one.
Dogs SHOULD NOT be
disposable and unfortunately, our Humane Societies
are already overcrowded! If for any reason you
can't keep your pet, we will take it back, and/or
assist you in finding it a new home. NEVER
take your pet to a shelter! If you purchase a
Long Coat German shepherd from Vom Haus Dettmer, you
will be REQUIRED to return your dog to our haus if
for ANY reason you can no longer keep it, or we will
help with finding a client to rehome your pet.
IF you are a giving person,
you'll be excited to know that a
portion of the profits of our
Long Coat German shepherd puppies sold go to help save the lives of children
with life-threatening illnesses. Donations are
made in your honor to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
, in memory of my only beloved son, Steven.
Thank you for stopping by. We hope you enjoy the rest
of the site.
Much Peace and Happiness, always.
